The Aurora
The aurora danced across the northern sky in green, blue and violet veils. In folklore they were born when the fire-fox swept the snowdrifts with its tail on the fell slopes. Sometimes they were the souls of the dead, at other times the sky's own fire.

House-Spirits
In every house lived a spirit who guarded the hearth, the barn and the grain. It was not a stranger — it was the soul of the house, born from the first inhabitant or the builder's handiwork.

The Gods
Ukko, Ahti, Tapio and Mielikki — the gods did not live in heaven but in the storm, the forest and the depths of water. They were as close as the weather, the harvest and the catch.

The Seers
The seer knew the words with which to heal and to fight. They travelled to the spirit world in the rhythm of the drum and took the shape of an animal when a human form was not enough.

Witches and Wizards
Witch and wizard ruled the two sides of the same power — one through herbs and spells, the other through knowledge of stars and writings. Either could heal or destroy.

Ancient Creatures
Hiisi, trolls, gnomes and other väki who lived in forests, swamps and rocks. Some were large and stupid, some small and cunning, some mere shadows of a human's own fear.

Animals in Mythology
The bear, the elk and Tuoni's swan — animals were kin, not prey. The bear was so sacred it was not spoken aloud, and the swan carried souls to Tuonela.

Tuonela
Tuonela was behind the black river — the otherworld, where all the dead went. Tuoni's mistress and master guarded the gates, and the kalmanväki clung to those who did not wash their hands.

Magical Concepts
Väki does not mean a crowd or people — it is a force, energy and spirit that flows in all of nature. The soul was divided into parts, and sisu kept one standing when all else failed.

Sacred Places and Objects
Sacred places were stones in the forest, trees in swamps and mountains on fells. Seidas connected human to the spirit world, and the Sampo was forged from iron into a mill of eternal fortune.
